Safe Silence is about a complex friendship. She was there for all of my teenage rites of passage and made me see things differently. Despite our closeness, we didn’t spend a lot of time talking. Mostly, we sat in silence, grounding each other, because it felt safe instead of uncomfortable. I wrote the song about the last night we saw each other before she left for college, when we listened to The Walters and watched the sunset in her car. When people listen, I hope they think about easy company, the feeling of driving with the windows down, and taking a moment to notice the clouds.
